Lucky us

Ocean View has a number of reputations: It’s a long way from any place significant; it’s like the Wild West; it’s the perfect place to build an unpermitted house (or put up a tent) but there’s no particular distinction in that.

What is distinct about Ocean View is the weather. Sperling’s Best Places has Ocean View listed as one of the ten best climates in the world, which is really saying something. Sperling’s data on Ocean View is not very accurate in some ways, like rainfall, which is typical of most sources. But temperature and humidity are very close, and these are the things that determine comfort.

In this regard, Ocean View compares with the majority of locations that typically appear on best climates list, including San Diego, which usually takes the number one spot. Ocean View is warmer in the summer–although San Diego can occasionally hit some pretty high temperatures–and warmer in the winter than the mainland city by a good five degrees.

The test that should be used is to ask if air conditioners and furnaces are ever needed. They never are in Ocean View, and this is what kicks locations like Honolulu to the curb when it comes to the best ten list. Ninety-six degrees doesn’t say “Paradise.” It says ‘’very high electric bill.”

Ocean View wouldn’t make the top ten nightlife locations list, nor would it rate highly in terms of convenience and white sand beaches, but if the climate is very important, then you have to consider the next important fact. You can buy into Ocean View for a price that’s affordable.

The point is that you can buy into paradise for far less money than any place on the top ten climate list, and your neighbors will speak English. It’s a mystery as to why the rest of the country hasn’t caught onto this and moved to Ocean View. A good thing for us, of course. Let mainland America embrace chin-deep snow, tornadoes, and heat waves–not to mention mortgages that resemble the national debt–meanwhile referring to their state as “God’s country.”

So check out Ocean View. Just don’t tell anyone.
